"45 years ago, 4175 Broadway was the site of a kung fu showdown that changed martial arts forever. Bruce Lee, a 24 year-old dropout from the University of Washington had recently landed in North Oakland, where he opened a martial arts studio not far from Oakland Technical High School. The school quickly attracted students. It also made enemies. The Bay Area's martial arts establishment vilified Lee for accepting non-Chinese pupils. The beef came to blows when Wong Jack Man crossed the bay from San Francisco to fight in a pre-arranged match with Lee's livelihood at stake."

"Today, we are going to show you some things that may not be right. If you see something that isn't working, you need to point it out. If you don't tell us what you think isn't working, we will show you the same thing again and again until we are out of time and money and you are stuck with it."

Business and sports metaphors - sorry. "At the point when adding people into the company feels like more work than the work that you can offload to the new employees, the defensive lineman has run around you and you probably need to start giving ground grudgingly. The first scale technique to implement is specialization."

Universal Edit Button

"The Universal Edit Button is a green pencil icon in the address bar that indicates a web page is editable. It is similar to the orange 'broadcast' RSS icon that indicates there is an RSS feed available. To see the universal edit button in your browser, install this Firefox extension. In time, we expect web browsers will support the Universal Edit Button directly, as they have done for RSS feeds."

"So if people can sample music in advance, and know in advance what they will like, music sales will plummet. This will be a sign of market efficiency, not market failure."

Six Great Long-Distance Bike Trails

"A quickly emerging network of abandoned railway lines are being converted by regional governments into superb bike paths. In addition to offering very gentle grades that are ideal for bikes, many of these new trails are satisfying long. The longest rail trail is over 300 miles long, and the longest off-pavement bike trail in the country stretches 2,500 miles. On these bike roads you can cruise along for weeks without ever encountering a car, or worrying about being bumped off the white line by an oblivious motorist. "

Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day

"You must spend the entire day in costume and character. The only rule is that you cannot actually tell anyone that you are a time traveler. ... Stand in front of a statue (any statue, really), fall to your knees, and yell 'NOOOOOOOOO' ... Discover and become obsessed with one trivial aspect of technology, like automatic grocery doors. Stay there for hours playing with it."

Wall of Tyra

"On my own and via some help (thanks to Erin and Caitlin), I've noticed a few sites have made big posts of gifs that I've taken and I have to say that a sea of mugging Tyras all on one page is pretty fucking hypnotizing. So, to reclaim what I've essentially taken from television, I thought I'd compile my own. Call it a wall of motion. Call it my art."

"Globollocks"

"Perhaps Tyler Brule really does nip to Zurich for a half-kilo of coffee beans; if so, it says far more about his airmiles account than his nose for coffee. No matter what, it sums up the particular strain of globollocks in Monocle that both entices and infuriates, like a coke-fiend friend. (You know that kind of person, the one with the fabulous lifestyle that's always a nudge or a breath away from spinning out of control, but for the moment, bathes you with centripetal adrenaline.)"

Google's Election Plan

"Australia Votes - and the all but certain sequel, America Votes - demonstrates emphatically the lopsided competitive advantage Google (and similar but less formidable web publishers) has over the traditional media companies." Be sure to watch the linked video.

"One of the key requirements of the Dungeon Siege engine is that once the game starts, the player never sees a loading screen or even a hitch in gameplay from beginning to end. Chris called this feature the 'continuous world'. This paper is the story of its development and how it works. First we'll talk about what continuous world means to Dungeon Siege, then we'll cover implementation of the various components of the system, along with the hard lessons the development team learned along the way."

"What her legions of fans don't realize, however, is that Ms. Digby's career demonstrates something else: that traditional media conglomerates are going to new lengths to take advantage of the Internet's ability to generate word-of-mouth buzz."

Practice Noticing Stuff

"To be a better design researcher, hone your ability to observe the world around you. Keep a regular log that you add to at least weekly (daily would be ideal). Document the strange, the curious, the weird, the awesome and the funny. Learn to keep a close eye on the artifacts, signs, designs, behaviors, products and experiences that you encounter in your everyday life. Put your observations on the Internet."

Dealing With Dates In Python

"I find Python's timezone stuff endlessly frustrating: I know it can do what I want, but it always takes me a ridiculously long time to figure out the necessary incantations. My recommendation is to convert to UTC as early as possible, stay in UTC as long as possible, and convert to local time as late as possible - preferably in JavaScript on the client."
